Olympiacos and Real Madrid Reach Historic First EuroLeague SuperCup Final in Abu Dhabi

European club basketball's newest trophy will be decided between two of its most recognizable names.

Olympiacos Piraeus and Real Madrid will meet in the first-ever EuroLeague Basketball SuperCup final on Saturday at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi after surviving two remarkably close semifinals on the opening night of the new competition.

Reigning EuroLeague champion Olympiacos defeated Fenerbahce 92–90 in Friday's first semifinal, while Real Madrid needed overtime to eliminate host representative Dubai Basketball 98–95 later in the evening.

The results set up a heavyweight final between the reigning European champion and the club with a record 11 continental titles.

More importantly, they ensured that the first SuperCup champion will have to earn the trophy after an opening night that immediately gave EuroLeague's newest event some competitive credibility.

Olympiacos Survives Fenerbahce Thriller

The first semifinal reunited the champions from the past two EuroLeague seasons.

Fenerbahce, the 2025 champion, controlled significant stretches against the team that succeeded it in 2026. The Turkish side led 25–20 after the opening quarter and 45–43 at halftime, before carrying a 78–69 advantage late in the third quarter.

But Olympiacos responded.

Evan Fournier became central to the comeback and eventually delivered the decisive basket as Georgios Bartzokas' team escaped with a two-point victory.

For Olympiacos, the result continued its recent run of success against Fenerbahce in high-profile games. The Greek club had also beaten Fenerbahce 79–61 in the 2026 EuroLeague Final Four semifinal on its way to winning the European championship.

Friday's rematch was far tighter, but the outcome was the same: Olympiacos advanced.

Real Madrid Erases 16-Point Deficit

If the opening semifinal was dramatic, the second game went even further.

Dubai Basketball, competing in front of a UAE crowd, built an early advantage of as many as 16 points against Real Madrid. But the Spanish club gradually recovered and had reduced the deficit to a single point, 43–42, by halftime.

The game eventually reached 88–88 at the end of regulation.

One of the biggest shots came from Timothé Luwawu-Cabarrot, whose three-pointer with 25 seconds remaining helped Real force overtime. Madrid then opened the extra period aggressively, building an eight-point advantage before Dubai mounted one final response.

Dubai had an opportunity to force another overtime, but McKinley Wright IV missed from three-point range and Real held on for the 98–95 victory.

Luwawu-Cabarrot and Walter Tavares scored 20 points apiece for Madrid, while Gabriel Deck added 15 and Jaime Pradilla finished with 13. Elie Okobo led Dubai with 24 points, with Dwayne Bacon contributing 19.

For Real Madrid, it was a demanding way to open the 2026–27 season — but also an early demonstration of the resilience required to recover from a double-digit deficit against a talented Dubai roster.

A New Trophy With a Familiar Final

Saturday's championship game will be played at 21:00 GST (19:00 CEST), with Fenerbahce and Dubai meeting three hours earlier in the third-place game.

The matchup is particularly appropriate for the inaugural edition.

Olympiacos arrives as the reigning EuroLeague champion, while Real Madrid finished as the 2026 runner-up and remains the most successful club in European basketball history with 11 continental championships.

There is no long SuperCup tradition behind Saturday's game. That is precisely the point.

Someone has to become the first name engraved on the trophy.

Why Abu Dhabi Matters

The SuperCup itself represents more than another preseason tournament.

Euroleague Basketball created the event as an annual season-opening competition, using a Final Four format featuring two semifinals, a third-place game and a championship game.

Its first edition in Abu Dhabi also continues EuroLeague's growing relationship with the region.

The city hosted the 2025 EuroLeague Final Four, and the SuperCup is part of a longer-term partnership between Euroleague Basketball and the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi. EuroLeague president Dejan Bodiroga described the launch as "an exciting new chapter for European club basketball," while CEO Chus Bueno said the organization wants to establish the event as a flagship fixture on the international calendar.

That broader strategy will inevitably generate discussion about how far European club basketball should expand beyond its traditional markets.

But on opening night, the basketball itself did plenty of work.

Two semifinals.

Five combined points separating the winners from the losers.

One game decided in overtime.

And now a final featuring the reigning EuroLeague champion against the competition's most decorated club.

For a tournament trying to establish an identity from scratch, that is a promising beginning.

On Saturday night in Abu Dhabi, Olympiacos or Real Madrid will make history as the first EuroLeague Basketball SuperCup champion.
